So Sioux Me

obama, obama jokes, cartoon, humor, political, conservative, hope n' change, hope and change, stilton jarlsberg, redskins, washington, trademark, indians

In a landmark decision, the US Patent and Trademark Office has decided to retroactively revoke many trademarks for the Washington Redskins football team on the grounds that their name and team logo are "disparaging to Native Americans." Which is nothing to take lightly; just hearing the word "redskin" causes Elizabeth Warren's high cheekbones to flush with anger.

The ruling is intended to put additional pressure on the team owners to change the franchise's name to something less offensive to Liberals and more appropriate to our current political climate, like the "Washington Overlords" or "Crashing Hard Drives."

Frankly, Hope n' Change doesn't give a rat's rear end about either football or political correctness, but we don't much like the idea that the Patent Office is now putting themselves in the business of regulating free speech (in this case by removing the financial value of a trademark). Nor do we like the idea of such regulation being contingent on finding someone - anyone - who feels offended.

Because if that's the new standard, we're pretty sure we can find waaaay more people who are offended by the word "Washington" than "Redskin."

From The Vault: Chief-in-Chief (Nov 9, 2009)

Last Thursday morning, the president took time out from his busy, busy schedule of making government promises to apologize for 200 years of breaking government promises.

During his speech to an assembly of Native American tribes, the allegedly-American president said that he "understands what it means to be an outsider," (perhaps because he attended private schools) and said "only in America can the adopted son of Crow Indians grow up to be president." Huh?

It turns out that Barack Black Eagle was "adopted" in 2008, at the age of 46. When it comes to "growing up," we suppose that it's better late than never...

Update 6/20/14 - Isn't it odd that Chief Running Gag was pleased rather than offended that his "Indian name" referred to his skin color? Then again, maybe his administration only thinks that names mentioning red skin are offensive.

First! Yah! So, I get to rename the team! I say: "Washington Corrupted."

And say, I think it time to get rid of "white" on the all bureaucratic in our post-racial colorblind world. I fine this word Offensive ... I'm not "white," I'm a tawney, tannish, pinky, yellow sort of beige melange, with a few freckles -- hell, I'm a veritable rainbow of color diversity!

Though, I also heard the descendants of Washington have asked that George's name be removed from the city. "It's offensive," said a great(5)-grandson, "I mean, great(5) would never tell a lie, and that place is a seething pit of falsehoods."

And well, back to you in the broadcast booth ....

Keep the name, insist you are named after the potato.

Or, more deliciously, ask when the NAACP and United Negro College Fund will be changing THEIR names.

After all, aren't 'negro' and 'colored persons' offensive?

I find the whole concept of Washington D.C. offensive. The giant sucking sound you hear is all of the hard earned money of our citizens being confiscated and drawn to the stinking pile of corruption that is the seat of our "government". 7 of the 10 richest counties in the nation are now in the D.C. suburbs. Take a look at the real estate listings in that area sometime....then consider that some of the nicest homes in your state's upscale communities are dachas for our overlords.

Have a great day comrades!

I was thinking Snyder should rename them the "T.E.A. Partiers", just to piss off harry greed.

I don't know Dan Snyder, obviously, but I was also thinking that he may be the kind of guy that doesn't like to be pushed around. He is a billionaire, isn't he? But I remember when I moved to where I live now, the locals asked me if I was a fan of their local team yet. And I told them no. And they said, quite emphatcally and angrily, WHY NOT !?!!?!! That kind of attitude pushes me the other way. And now, I will NEVER be a fan of their team.

No one is going to force me to like a sports team, much like I'm never going to be forced to like king hussein and his illegal regime.

I agree with the political correctness of changing the Redskins name, since evidently one Native American somewhere found it offensive that his skin color was brought up. Furthermore, I find many other names that are skin colors offensive and demand that they too be changed or forced out of existence. Some that spring to mind are: Chicago White Sox, White Out, White Sale, Whitewash, White Castle Hamburgers, Whitewater rafting, and of course - The Whitehouse.

Judi King said...

Geoff, You're really funny today. There is no such thing as Red,Black, White, Yellow, or any other definite color of SKIN. There all just colors and skin can be any variation or mixture of each. Finding a name of color offensive is offensive in itself. Not to mention ridiculous and petty, as are all PC idiots.

You know Snyder is going to file suit against the gubmint, but it’s a crying shame he has to spend his own money on this lunacy. And will the NFL back him up? I doubt it, but it would be the right thing to do. This is a blatant example of government gone rogue against a fairly large group of U.S. citizens that they are supposed to protect. I hope Snyder packs his team up an moves elsewhere and the idiots in DC can do without the revenue the Redskins bring in. I’m sure there are plenty of cities that would love to have them.

As for re-naming the team, I favor a suggestion I saw somewhere else..."Washington Foreskins" in "honor" of all the P.C. bureaucratic dickheads.

This reminds me of a story about being offended...
A guy walks into a bar, grousing about the shafting he's just experienced at the hands of a lawyer. He exclaims "all lawyers are assholes!", and a guy AT the bar KICKS him FIRMLY in the "jewels". After gathering himself, and his breath, he says to the guy, "SO... you a LAWYER?"... and the guy responds, "NO... I'm an ASSHOLE!"

John the Econ said...

@Stilton says that "The ruling is intended to put additional pressure on the team owners to change the franchise's name to something less offensive to Liberals and more appropriate to our current political climate...".

Oh, it's much bigger than that. It's putting all business in America on notice that the Federal government will now in effect be censoring what they can and cannot trademark. If this notion doesn't chill you, it should.

Today it's trademarks that some white liberals thinks offends native Americans. Tomorrow it will be anything that white liberals feel offends those of African descent. Then they'll work their way down the list of the usual grievance groups; homosexuals, Muslims, feminists, etc.

And Hope and Change should give a rats ass about "political correctness". PC isn't just about trying to "be nice" to various grievance groups. It's about taking control of the language. And if you control language, you control speech and debate.

It's another assault intended to render the 1st Amendment irrelevant, and to subjugate the rest of us.

Speaking of neutering speech and debate, did anyone catch what Hillary said the other day?:

"We cannot let a minority of people — and that's what it is, a minority of people — hold a viewpoint that terrorizes the majority of people..."

Really? I always thought that protecting the "minority" was the entire point of the 1st Amendment. Well, according to Hillary, it isn't, especially if you are talking about gun control.

So in one sentence, Hillary was taking on both the 1st and 2nd Amendments.

So, between these two events, I'm feeling quite a bit less free this morning.

Who cares if the IRS is destroying evidence, and covering it up with the help of Pelosi and the Democrats? No, we need to be concerned with the name of an NFL team. WhoopdeeEffingDo.

Hey, has anyone ever considered the damage the Federal Government does to the various Native American Tribes by keeping them as serfs to the Federal Feeding Trough? Seems like that is a bigger issue than the name of a football team but it is much easier to complain about a name than to do something substantive.

I want to grab these moron lefties by the collar and tell them to grow up. Spoiled little brats, at best.

Stilton Jarlsberg said...

@Jim Hlavac- I, too, am tired of being called white as a government-approved ethnic designation; seriously, what other ethnic group is named only by their skin color on government forms?

@Anonymous- Barry loves to apologize for what he believes to be America's failings (although in fairness, Native Americans got quite a screwing by believing government promises). One of my favorite examples is from early in his presidency, when he traveled to Japan and wanted to apologize for the atomic bombs which ended WWII. The Japanese had to talk him out of it.

@rickn8or- And his golf name is "Swings Both Ways."

@TrickyRicky- What? Washington insiders getting rich on our money?! I'm shocked!

By the way, "Washington Insiders" would be a decent team name.

@WMD- The funniest idea I've seen online is for the team to change their logo to a redskin potato. Then nobody could be pissed off - with the possible exception of the spud-phobic first lady.

@Geoff King- I don't doubt that some Native Americans are offended, and I don't necessarily think they're wrong. But we can't define free speech only in terms of that which does not offend. After all, there's no need for freedom of speech apart from expressing that which may be unpopular.

@Judi King- You're quite right that skin comes in infinite gradations rather than being limited to the 8 basic Crayola colors. And for that matter, I'm pretty frickin' tired of hearing references (especially from Barry) to "persons of color," which implies that those outside of the group have no color. Except, of course, for John Boehner.

@Colby- You know, renaming the team to the "Washington Sucks" could be enormously popular. Even I would buy a team jersey!

@It's No Gouda- If the team becomes the Washington Foreskins, will the cheerleaders still shout "Push 'em back, push 'em back, waaaay back"?

@Harvey- Thanks for the link. Apparently the Black Eagle lives in Indonesia and eats dogs. (Actually the wiki says it's in tropical Asia and hunts mammals, so I'm making some assumptions above).

@Bruce Bleu- I love lawyer jokes because I detest lawyers in general. Oh, I'm sure there are some good ones out there (my own grandfather was one). But like peace-loving Muslims, they really need to speak out more against their bloodthirsty brethren.

@John the Econ- You're quite right that this is much broader than just football, and that other offended groups will be chiming in now. And again, the line for free speech should not and must not be drawn according to what some group finds offensive.

And you've misconstrued me about not giving a rat's ass about political correctness. What I meant, but didn't express well, is that I don't give a rat's ass about being politically correct. I care passionately about the evil which is political correctness.

Regarding Hillary's quote, it's dumbfoundingly horrible. As you say, an open attack on the 1st and 2nd Amendments. I agree with Dinesh D'Souza that if she gets into the White House, she would likely complete Obama's work of destroying this country.

@Geoff King- Barry can't lose on the kids immigration scam; he actually wants the Right to take the lead on heartlessly saying that these poor, innocent (and not so innocent) "children" need to be sent back to desperate circumstances. And if the GOP doesn't rise to the bait, Barry gets to demand bigger government and social programs to handle the newcomers.

True story - Last weekend obama visited the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, which straddles the border between North Dakota and South Dakota.

He spoke for almost an hour on his future plans for increasing every Native American's present standard of living.

He referred to his career as a Senator, how he had signed 'YES' for every Indian issue that came to his desk for approval.

Although President Obama was vague on the details of his plan, he seemed most enthusiastic about his future ideas for helping his 'red sisters and brothers'.

At the conclusion of his speech, the tribe presented Obama with a plaque inscribed with his new Indian name - “Walking Eagle”.

The proud President then departed in his motorcade, waving to the crowds.

A news reporter later inquired of the group of chiefs how they came to select the new name they had given the President.

They explained that “Walking Eagle” is the name given to a bird so full of shit it can't fly.

Well, the part about visiting the reservation is true...

Speaking of disparaging names, check out this list of 12 Trademarks Declared Less Offensive Than Redskins by the Patent and Trademark Office. One example - "Uppity Negro."

Yes, the same government agency that deemed "Redskins" too disparaging is okay with trademarking "Uppity Negro."

The irony just drips off of that one...

Stilton Jarlsberg said...

@BruceBleu- Actually, you don't need to file for copyright to have it, and publishing your material in a public forum like this only strengthens that copyright (which, admittedly, isn't the same as a trademark). Still, if any of the teams switches to one of your names, you'll probably make millions.

@Anonymous- There's a lovely simplicity (and implied "eff you") about the name "Washington Native Americans." I'd like to see that happen!

@Anonymous 2.718- I agree completely.

WMD said...

Jim H. I guess you could say he was a "white guy" but it was a German guy (around 1497 I think) named Westermuller (sp?) or something like that that created a new world map and used Vespucci's name. Amerigo was also a cartographer and explorer. And "America" is the feminized verion in Latin. He did that because because Europa and Asia are the feminzed latin versions of their names.

Furthermore, Columbus came to "the New World" four diffrent times and died never knowing that he hadn't discovered the route to the far east. Vespuccis contribution was that he's the one that figured out that this was indeed a new continent. And that's why the Westermuller (sp?) guy named it "America"

I'm going purely on my memory for all that but, you get the point.

Hey, why shouldn't Barry O claim to be native american? He claims he was born in Hawaii and that's a lie too, so what's one more lie?

Anonymous 2.718 said...

Mr. Hlavac -

WRT to "native American", I couldn't agree more. Personally, I was trying to be somewhat politically correct by using that term so that, god forbid, I wasn't accused of "insensitivity".

I am a native American, by which I mean I was born in America. To reserve that term for people who are descended from those who were indigenous when Columbus showed up is sloppy to say the least. Even these indigenous people came from somewhere else originally. The "indians", as Columbus called them because he thought he had found a westward route to India, originated in Asia, so far as I know. They came over about 20K years ago during the last great Ice Age when the Aleutians were passable by foot from what is now Northern Russia. Look at the Eskimos v. the modern Mongolians.

What people do not understand is that these migrations, the conflicts that ensue when other peoples show up, and the cultural changes that occur as result are a part of the human condition since the beginnings of humans as they migrated out of Africa in various waves, and thence throughout Europe and Asia - and then the Americas. One example - look at the impact of the Mongol invasions throughout Europe and Asia - you can see them in the modern Russian.

I rather think that the influx of Hispanics (there is another one of those hubris words) into North America is another such cultural-changing migration - hence the conflicts.

Stilton Jarlsberg said...

@Transcendental- I thought the Rand Paul piece in the WSJ was excellent, and I agree with his assessment.

@Jim Hlavac- Good point. The term "Native American" should be inherently offensive for the reasons you describe.

@Geoff King- All I know is that somebody owes somebody reparations. Or not.

@CenTexTim- "Walking Eagle" indeed...

And I enjoyed the piece on the trademarks that the government doesn't find as offensive as Redskins. Perhaps we can look forward to watching games played by the Washington Uppity Negroes soon.

@WMD- I'm glad that they decided to go with "America" instead of calling the continent "Where The F*ck Are We?" Although we could have ended up with the world's funniest national anthem.

@Anonymous- Barry is black, white, Hawaiian, Indonesian, Irish, American, Native American, or whatever else he wants to morph into depending on the politics du jour. He is everything and nothing.

@Anonymous 2.718- Good points!

@Stilton, I don't give a rat's ass about being politically correct either, but as we've seen recently, it's not going to be long before we'll all be forced to be.

There's little question that if I were to be in academia today and were voicing the same ideas I was 30+ years ago, I'd be quickly expunged. We recently saw what happened to Mozilla co-founder & CEO Brendan Eich when it was revealed that he contributed money to a politically incorrect cause, even though it was the exact same cause that Barack Obama said he stood for until as recently as 2 years ago.

Now that the Patent Office has openly taken this step, the march towards state enforcement of political correctness across other agencies will only accelerate. As the the IRS scandal proves, practically every government agency has now been fully taken over by the far left. The enforcement infection will quickly spread all across the bureaucracy.

Picture an emergency room, oh, less than 10 years into the future:

What kind of rationale justifies abortion as sparing the unborn from the future plight of poverty and abuse and then, in the name of compassion, imports thousands of illegal children destined to become lifetime welfare recipients? That confusing contradiction also holds true for the children who, if not for abortion, liberals believe would be destined to a lifetime of protracted illness.

Moreover, what kind of ideology that, on the one hand, argues that abortion releases mostly underprivileged children from what would otherwise be a life of abuse, crime, and incarceration, while on the other hand, it argues to allow entry to even the most violent gang members, who brazenly tell Border Patrol agents that law enforcement has no control over their desire to break into a sovereign nation and wreak havoc?
