Colby was responding to the North Carolina Democratic Party Chairman’s comments regarding the so-called Republican philosophy of turning the state back to the 50’s. Colby’s well researched letter makes me wish we could return to those days as well. (By the way, when posting a comment - which I hope you'll do often - if you click the Name/URL choice you can give yourself a handle).

Before another word comes out of my mouth, let me thank you for your service to the country. I'm humbled and honored to have you here.

I'm glad to say that I have a pretty high opinion of a lot of young people (and I have a daughter about your same age). It is easy - and perhaps even natural - for the young to be bamboozled with promises of rainbows and unicorns. What sounds good and compassionate (like a welfare "safety net") when you're young looks a lot different when you've had decades to watch the damage done to families and society.

I can't blame the young for their lack of experience...but I can, and DO, blame the media and politicians for feeding them false information about current news and history.

But the young voters who embraced Obama last time around are waking up. They've seen for themselves that they can't find jobs or, in many cases, even move out of their parents' homes. They've seen that Obama didn't cut the deficit in half, that he didn't reach across the aisle to govern in a "new" way, that his promises of transparency were lies, that he never had any intention of bettering relations between blacks and whites, and that he's just another narcissistic hack politician and (oh yeah!) anti-American socialist.

The flip side of the naivete that made them Obama voters in the first place is that this is also the first time they've been blatantly lied to by a politician - and a lot of them are taking it personally. And it's up to all of us to help them find their way to conservatism as their eyes open up.

But hey, let me climb down from my soapbox and just say that I'm delighted you're here! When I think of "Hope" regarding the future, I don't think of Obama's campaign slogans... Stilton, please feel free to blow this away due to it's length.

Dear Editor:

I was reading the front page article in the April 19, 2012 R&L about NC Democratic Party Chairman David Parker, and something he said really struck home with me. And I quote:

“The good of the Democratic Party must be my polar star to guide this ship into battle in the fall,” he said. “While we should focus on fighting the Republican philosophy that is turning our state back to the 1950s, we must focus for the moment on party unity.”

I fully understand that citizens might be concerned about our great country returning to the dark times of the 1950’s which were mostly under Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower. A few sobering statistics from the decade of the 1950’s…..

• Unemployment averaged a staggering 4.5% from 1950 through 1959 (Bureau of Labor Statistics website).

• Automobile sales, home sales, and household income experienced unprecedented growth unlike any other time in U.S history.

• Small family farms were the rule, not the exception.

• The tourism industry boomed with the now widespread ownership of automobiles, and the newfound prosperity of the automobile owners.

• Gasoline averaged 29 cents per gallon (about $2.35 adjusted for inflation).

• The federal deficit only rose an unimpressive $27 billion in this 10 year span. That’s about $218 billion (with a “B”) adjusted for inflation. Compare that with the inpressive $5 trillion (with a “T”) that has been added to the deficit in the past three and a half years.

• The space program started with the establishment of NASA in 1958.

• The Civil Rights Movement began, and schools began to become integrated. Rosa Parks inspired millions by refusing to move to the back of the bus.

• The Interstate Highway system was started.

• Television became common in average households, no longer only a rich man’s luxury.

• Strangely enough, The Congress, Senate and President actually still used the archaic and outdated U.S. Constitution as the “gold standard” to perform their jobs.

Yes, the 1950’s was truly a dreadful era in history that we should be careful to not repeat. These were barbaric times when you were (unbelievably) expected to pay for your own food, college, birth control, housing, and health insurance. Thankfully, we have progressed considerably since those dark days when the Federal Government, for the most part, just left people alone to do their own thing.

Seriously folks… Our country has been in steady decline since the 1950’s (with a few scattered bright spots), but the past three and a half years has been exponentially worse. Our national debt has exploded to a staggering 16 trillion dollars; 5 trillion of that in the past 3-1/2 years. The Federal Government is bloated, hyper-inefficient, out of control, and growing larger and more powerful daily. The people we employ are having lavish parties and vacations with OUR money. I for one would love to go back to the “dreadful” 1950’s and will be voting as such come November. It is far past time to return to personal responsibility, and to take back the government that is supposed to be OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people. Please join me in removing as many “Progressives” from office as possible come November 6, 2012. Let’s stop bowing to foreign powers and make America great again… like it was in the 1950’s.Colbynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8993108951931633758.post-38064172993731394492012-05-08T05:05:50.385-05:002012-05-08T05:05:50.385-05:00@Debbie Wasserman-Schultz....

Obama can't run on vague promises of Hope, Change, being post-racial, fiscally responsible, or a unifier. The rainbows have faded, and the unicorns have been put out to pasture. This time, he has to run as who he truly is: an angry, anti-American socialist who represents the worst of oldschool Chicago political corruption.

Regarding the "threat" of taking us back to the 50's, that's like threatening us with being told we'll live in Mayberry. Yes, please. But sadly, the young people hearing the dire warnings of going back to the 50's will just assume it was a horrible time, when police used attack dogs and fire hoses on women who wanted birth control, and our president was that awful Adolf Eichmannhower.

@John the Econ- I think it was Michelle Obama who recently referred to Barry as a "blessing" on the American people. Which probably meant that, for the first time in her adult life, she was proud of God.

@Pete(Detroit)- I'm all for women having the choice to pursue careers in or out of the home... but if anyone wants to attack the importance of mothers and homemakers in the 50's, then I'm ready to fight. I've very much in agreement with both of you.

Regarding Obama "inheriting" a bad situation, that's like Lizzie Borden complaining about being an orphan. The Bamster claimed he understood the depth of our national problems and had all the solutions. For him to claim later that his first term only appears to be a dismal failure because he actually had no effing clue what the problems really were is no consolation whatsoever. He's admitting he was clueless but shot his mouth off anyway. Why would we want more of that?!

@Stan da Man- I'm hoping that young voters, in particular, will turn on Obama owing to his "failure to deliver." The question is whether we can get them to focus on the lack of jobs and the fact that they've had to move back in with their parents...and to ignore the BS about Republicans wanting to jack up the interest rates on student loans.

@Gang of One- Don't I wish Obama would run on his record.
