Jarring News

The liberal mainstream media thought it had struck gold earlier this week, when they reported that President George W. Bush's pro-life beliefs had been formed, in part, when his mother showed him her own miscarried fetus in a jar.

Yikes!

Media outlets were largely divided on the matter, with some portraying the incident as if the Bush's were some sort of gothic carnies, traveling from town to town and charging people 25¢ to see something gruesome...while other media outlets simply suggested that a whacked-out Barbara Bush kept the jarred fetus on a shelf between the pickled okra and the homemade preserves.

The truth is simpler, sadder, and more significant.

When George W. Bush was a teen, his mother suffered a tragic miscarriage. As was (and frequently is) considered the medically appropriate thing to do, she placed the fetus in a clean container (actually tupperware) to take with her as she was rushed to the hospital. It was on that drive that the young George Bush briefly saw the fetus, and was struck by the fact that it was a real person and a real loss of life.

President Bush bravely shares that story in his book "Decision Points" (with the equally-brave permission of his remarkable mother, Barbara Bush) to show that his decisions and convictions stem from real experience and real life.

And perhaps to instruct those with cavalier attitudes about abortion that there can be no informed "pro-choice" without first acknowledging the significance of death.

  2. Geez, and I thought I was pissed at GW. I appreciate the good things he did and I'm sure his faith is strong, (unlike faux Christians with Muslim ties) but I just want him to retire quietly and leave us alone. I've said for the past 21 months that Bush racked em up and Obama is running the table, but I don't think I have your level of enmity, moronpolitics. I don't begrudge him the option to write his book; I just won't buy it. Like I said, retire...go away...STFU.

  3. Bush has continued to be bashed for every problem in the world, real or imagined, and he hasn't said a word until now. He was not our best president, but he wasn't the worst, either. That he is writing a book to respond to all the criticisms by explaining how and why he made his decisions is certainly within his rights. No one is forcing anyone to buy the book.

As to his refusal to comment on current policy and current administration decisions, I believe he is correct. His time to lead has past and he needs to leave the administration of this country to the current elected leaders, no matter how inept they are. I wish Carter and Clinton would follow W’s lead on this.

  4. Awww now that is such a sad story about the baby in the Tupperware....I think that's very sweet and so very relevant....people today are, I think, purposely ignoring the fact of preborn life....I mean there are 3D ultrasounds everywhere for excited mothers to see the unborn...there is no longer any excuse for abortion.

As far as Bush....he wasn't perfect but I still think he's really gotten a bad rap. I understand why he would want to write a book. And I think his wife was such a graceful and good First Lady...no comparison to what is in there now. Yes, I do miss the Bush's! But if only Reagan could come back....

Reagan can't come back, but his spirit can...if we let it.

  6. Hm...Stilton, wasn't there some rare situation in Illinois where Obama actually cast a vote but it was to support allowing a live child to die in the trash after a partial birth abortion? I don't remember the specifics; hope you do. And I personally will continue to hold George Bush in very high regard for the decisions he made trying to keep this country safe after 9-11. The mainstream media trashed this president relentlessly and plenty still do today. I'd love stand in line to buy his book, shake his hand, thank him for his service as president. He has the right to set the record straight from his perspective. The entire Bush family is a class act that all political persons should emulate.

  7. Anonymous (immediately above)- You have a good memory regarding Obama and abortion, and it certainly speaks to the difference between the difference in presidential belief systems. Here's the story (from OnTheIssues.org):

On March 30, 2001, Obama was the only Illinois senator who rose to speak against a bill that would have protected babies who survived late term labor-induced abortion. Obama rose to object that if the bill passed, and a nine-month-old fetus survived a late-term labor-induced abortion was deemed to be a person who had a right to live, then the law would "forbid abortions to take place." Obama further explained the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment does not allow somebody to kill a child, so if the law deemed a child who survived a late-term labor-induced abortion had a right to live, "then this would be an anti-abortion statute."

In other words, a healthy full-term baby who is delivered alive is still not a "child" in Obama's world, because that might pose a legal threat to abortion law. And what is Mr. Obama's window of time in which this newborn infant must be killed in order to protect abortion law? Five minutes? An hour? A day? A year...?

George Bush saw a dead fetus, and was filled with regret for the life lost. Barack Obama can look at a newborn infant and fail to concede that it is either alive or a "being."

There's no question which is the more frightening mindset.

And related to the discussions above, we'd also like to get a chance to say "thank you" to President Bush someday. He wasn't a perfect president, and we've got a long list of things we wish he'd done differently. But we believe him to be a good and honorable man...in marked contrast to the current occupant of the Oval Office.

  8. Stilton:
When it comes to politicians, "good and honorable" are relative terms. Compared to Obama, Benito Mussolini was a good and honorable man and he, at least, got the trains to run on time. Whatever good character GW has, it is foolish and dishonest to separate his bad decisions and statist actions from the man. He was thrust into a terrible, no-win situation by 9-11, and he did what he thought was right, but that can never excuse his poor choices no matter how much worse Obama is or how fondly we recall GW's humanity or love of country. Honest examination can be painful but if you aren't up to it, don't take the job.

  9. Angry Hoosier Dad- Yikes! If I'm not reading you wrong, you're suggesting that my comments may have been "foolish and dishonest" and that I'm not equal to the task of "honest examination" of the past President's record.

But when I said I've got a "long list of things I wish he'd done differently," I supposed it was clear that I'm not excusing or denying the poor choices he made. Please don't mistake tact for tacit approval.

But it's true that I place significant value on "GW's humanity and love of country" because these are traits sorely missing in Barack Obama, and the nation (and world) are the worse for it.

  10. Stilton:
I did not mean to suggest that you were foolish or dishonest or tacitly approving of GW's poor choices. I wouldn't be here if I thought that. I meant it as a general principle for all of us to remember so that we are honest with ourselves and not blinded by reverie. My final comment was about the Presidency, not you. You are clearly up to the burden you have accepted on your shoulders. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

  11. "And what is Mr. Obama's window of time..."

Reminds me of a bumper sticker - "Don't think of it as "Capitol Punishment" - it's just a retro-active abortion"

  12. I never knew that a Bush baby was lost. Of course that had a profound effect on GW! For ANYONE to wax anything but sympathy for the young Bush family losing a child in that way is simply unacceptable. Where has America's heart gone? No wonder we're sliding into hell.

  13. Angry Hoosier Dad- No problem! I was just checking for clarity's sake...especially because I really appreciate and value your comments here!

And as for me being up to my particular "burden" - I haven't raised the bar very high. Basically all I need is the daily news (which is predictably annoying), a bad attitude, and a mess of clip art! (grin)
