Police Stupidity

Despite admitting that he didn't know the facts in the case of the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, who verbally assaulted and failed to cooperate with officers responding to a burglary report at his own residence, the President opined that it was a white policeman who had acted "stupidly," then went on to complain that America's police unfairly target blacks and hispanics.
In this case, the white cop, Sgt. James Crowley, is an honored officer who has taught racial sensitivity classes for 5 years, after being recommended for the post by his black supervisor. He is not a "rogue cop" - he is well educated, respected, and a professional public servant who puts his life on the line daily.
As was the case with Sonia Sotomayor and the firefighters, the "facts" for Obama were not important - the assumption was that white people are more likely to be wrong than right and, even if they are right, it's time for them to step aside. Forget "justice" - it's time for payback.
Racism, in any form, should be unacceptable...whether from whites in the 60's preventing black children from entering a school, or from the President of the United States opining (with no evidence) that white cops are, as a group, stupid bigots.
If Obama doesn't personally apologize to Sgt. James Crowley, then he should rightfully and permanently be considered a racist. Which should leave all of us asking what in hell has happened to our country.
Stilton Jarlsberg
Dear Mr. Apology,
ReplyDeleteNow would be a good time to use all that practice in apology that you have been working on (blaming the USA for every major problem in the world) for something good for our country.
Thanks for turning everything in this country into race. IDIOT.
By the way, Stlit. This cartoon is a very good shot. Excellent !

Philip, thanks for the comments! Almost unbelievably, the president says that he "stands by" his original remarks, despite increasing evidence that the arresting officer did everything right. The Cambridge police department and the Fraternal Order of Police have come out with statements that they are unhappy with the president's generalized attack on law officers.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it was too much to expect that Obama could really usher us into a post-racial America, but at the very least he should try to set a good example for a post-racist America.
Stilt, things are going tough for Bammy.

From an old article on Reggie Lewis and his death.
ReplyDeleteCrowley was mentioned on page 3. Clearly he has no history of being a racist.
