Chicago Chicago
Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Barack Obama, along with wife Michelle and close personal friend Oprah Winfrey, is traveling to Copenhagen to make a pitch for Chicago to be the home of the 2016 Olympics. Unfortunately, international visitors may want no part of the city where a high school student's horrific murder by gang members was caught on videotape.
Then again, it's not like Chicago is the home of mobsters like Al Capone, bloodbaths like the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, or serial killers like John Wayne Gacy or anything. Oh wait...yes it is!

So? In 2012 the Olympics will be held in London - specifically, the East End of London, which has an even longer history of violent crime. Well, I suppose that's one way to subsidize gentrification, eh?
ReplyDeleteStereoroid, you make a good point. Very few venues for the Olympics are really safe (at least, not until thousands of armed police sweep the streets). So truth be told, Hope n' Change's real problem here isn't with Chicago. (A city we actually love, outside of the politicians it produces.)
ReplyDeleteThe real problem is with Obama's priorities...and this whole Chicago/Olympics episode makes a perfect metaphor. See, he's going to sell something which desperately needs to be fixed...instead of actually fixing it. He's substituting salesmanship for solutions... not just here, but in healthcare, national defense, the economy, racial matters, and every other critical issue facing this country.
Obama was elected Commander in Chief, yet he ignores Afghanistan while acting like he's nothing more than the head of Chicago's Chamber of Commerce. His inability (or more likely, unwillingness) to prioritize and concentrate on the most difficult and important tasks is inexcusable... and increasingly dangerous for our country.
Like Polanski, the Bammy past won't go away...

Philip, call me a pessimist, but I'm still betting that the Dems will use reconciliation to push through a bill which includes the public option.
ReplyDeleteNo, Stilt. You're not a pessimist. You're right to be careful. Maybe I'm wrong, but I tend to think that we've probably avoided the worst.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Copenhagen was a HUGE sacrifice for Michelle.
My Gosh, these folks are shameless.
Michelle Obama: I know people say it was a sacrifice for me and Oprah to go to Copenhagen

Considering that President Obama used political good will to try to bring the Olympics to a city that, for decades, anyone around the world (no matter how small a village they lived in)upon hearing the word "Chicago" responded with, "Al Capone, Bang Bang", rebuffed in favor of "City of Roving Death Squads" Rio, and he got nothing but ridicule, it truly was a sacrifice.
ReplyDeleteWindy, you're right...and it was probably more of a sacrifice than he was counting on!
