Olympic Gamesmanship

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
For unexplainable reasons, the International Olympic Committee rejected Chicago as an Olympic site despite Barack Obama's repeated assertions that the United States is an arrogant, war-mongering, environment-destroying country, and Michelle Obama's heartfelt speech about her father's battle with multiple sclerosis in Chicago (and really, doesn't that just scream "Olympic fun" to you?).

Assuming that the president doesn't like to take such a spectacular pratfall in public, Hope n' Change wonders just what sort of backroom pressures were brought to bear by Chicago dealmakers to force Obama to travel to Copenhagen to act as a salesman? But at least there's a "teachable moment" here: when the outcome is really important...send more troops.

  2. Karl Rove On Obama's Olympic Failure :

Rove: "He got exactly what he deserved by personalizing this, by raising his profile in this and by making this such a specific personal ask, his remarks to the committee are incredible not only the bite that you read but he also said, he referred to his own election"

"If you got a guy going around apologizing for the United States and saying "we're bad, we're wrong and we're terrible and I'll make it better, you're inviting people to...kick the United States and that's exactly what happened"

  3. Philip, Rove has it exactly right. Obama's big pitch to the Olympic committee amounted to "yes, America has sucked, especially in recent years, but why don't you bring the Olympics to Chicago to see how much better the country has gotten now that I am king?"

The committee in Copenhagen didn't buy it, and Americans should be outraged that the president and his wife are still presenting themselves as the only good things in the United States.
