Blackboard of Education

On September 8th, the president is scheduled to talk to schoolkids about education and getting ahead in America...although it's not entirely clear if he considers this to be one topic...or two very different ones.

Because in these days of
Hope n' Change, kids notice things - like scholarships going to poor-performing minority students instead of National Merit Scholars. And a much-praised Supreme Court judge like Sonia Sotomayor ruling that skin color is more important than test results when it comes to job promotions. And a president who declared that a policeman is "stupid" simply because he's white.

See, this is the problem with trying to educate kids, Mr president...they pay more attention to what you do than what you say.

I remember as a kid I used to start acting dumb in class, because the teacher always called on the dumb ones to participate and not the ones who always raised their hands with the answers (who happened to be me.) When the teacher WOULD finally call on me...I would hem and haw and "guess" the correct answer in hopes I could get more attention.

Anyway...just a memory brought up from your comic...since that's going to be happening large scale in our country!!!! Act poor, act dumb, act underprivileged...and get everything handed to you on a platter while the poor honest folk have to work their butts off for their future AND yours as well.

Suzy, you make a really good point.

When Obama makes his school speech, it would be great if he would actually tell kids that the age of entitlement is over; that the era of victimization has ended and that the era of self-declared martyrdom should never have started. He should say that rewards come from work, period, and that no one is owed anything except the opportunity to learn and achieve.

If only...
