Up, Up And Away!

The police are now saying that the entire "Balloon Boy" incident was a deliberate hoax intended to fool the media and the American public. There is still no word on where the family got the idea to tell a huge, preposterous lie only to advance their own careers, although FAA investigators said a "valuable clue" was an "Obama/Biden" bumpersticker which was attached to the runaway balloon.

Oh wow, just read the news, and its possible a media outlet was in on the hoax.... you need an extra pane in your comic now. The similarities are astounding.

I was incredibly sickened to hear that the whole thing was a hoax. It shows an incredibly callous disregard for the safety and comfort of their own children.

An Obama/Biden bumpersticker is always a tip off! ;-)

Gabriel Girl, I couldn't agree more. The Heene children are going to end up without parents (who may well be going to jail). And imagine the psychological scars on young Falcon Heene, age 6, who will unfairly believe that it was his slip-up on live TV ("You said we were doing it for a show") that sent his father to jail and destroyed the family.

Apart from the damage to their own family, imagine the danger to potential rescuers (there was talk of lowering people on lines to try to grab the balloon, and wild driving on the ground trying to keep the balloon in sight). People could easily have been killed, and the lives and finances of many people and institutions were affected.

And why? Because this has become a culture of media whores...and empowerment, whether personal or political, now rests upon one's ability to create a compelling (if not necessarily truthful) story, delivered by a media-friendly persona.
