The Hole Truth

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
The mainstream media found it warm, delightful, and humanizing when the president quoted his daughter, Malia, asking "Did you plug the hole yet, daddy?"

And while it's certainly possible that Obama hoped this cynical ploy would gain him some sympathy, we think it goes farther than that...and was actually Obama's attempt to cast
everyone who questions his mishandling of the crisis as a naive and dewey-eyed child, who means well but can't understand grown-up complexities.

In other words, we should all shut up and let Big Daddy do all the thinking.

Meanwhile, we think Malia may have hit on something...and that citizens
and the press should now start each day by asking the president what holes he has successfully plugged?

Oh my, child-like Presidents say the darndest things!

I do believe this phrase has a certain "stickyness" potential, and we will hear it in many contexts for a long time. "Plug the Damn Hole", "Plug the Hole, Daddy", can work on so many levels, not just political. I predict that as a catch-phrase, this one will grow legs and run.

Here somebody has set it to music:

Did They Plug The Hole Yet Daddy? by Trade Martin

But he did plug one hole, the GOLF HOLE. Now that's the one the counts, at least as far as he is concerned.

And the nation is right with him on this. We are all thoroughly teed off!

Obama's level of self absorption is truly something to behold. I am sure that it will be discussed in textbooks for years to come (if we are still able to read and have books after the cataclysm) as one of the most public displays of this phenomenon ever witnessed before the fall of America.

I want the t-shirt too! Stilt you totally need to get on Cafe Press....

Great job again, so funny...this is the only blog I check every morning!!!!

I agree with Suzy. You should embrace some good old-fashioned capitalism before it's all gone and sell these shirts online. Could just give our economy a real shot in the arm!

Oh my... I've got so many design ideas running through my head...

Here's just one... swap the 'O' in Hole with the Obama logo and just make that a shirt all by itself.. perhaps with an elephant "plugging" the hole in 2010/2012

p.s. For what's it's worth - I couldn't give a rats *ahem* "hole" what his daughters say to him

Readers- Glad you liked the shirt! We're not really selling it (or any "Hope n' Change" merchandise at this point), but we'd love for the picture to get passed around.

Although we actually do think that a few thousand Tea Party members wearing "Plug the Hole, Daddy" t-shirts would look good. Hmmm....

alan- Things do move fast on the Internet. Although I'm not quite sure that this particular approach carries the nuanced political overtones of our design (grin).

Dark Knight, I love your idea about "Hole" being replaced with the logo for "O"!!!

Come on....I bet a "Hope n Change" online store would do better than you think!!!!

I got a Jan Brewer "Rosie" sticker but I just put it on the fridge because I figured something would happen to my car if I put it on there. Anyway the market for this stuff is out there!!!

Stilton, we know you are busy cranking out these cartoons 7 days a week, but really, if you could, find the time to check out CafePress. I know I would be first in line for an official Hope N' Change Cartoons coffee mug. I'm usually on my first cup of coffee when I log on in the AM. One version could be your banner wrapped around it, my choice would be one with your image of Obama like you used on the countdown widget.

alan- Thanks, and I'll probably look into it. Not so much to make money (though I certainly have nothing against money) but because it might be nice for folks to have a way to show they're part of the "Hope n' Change" underground.
