HnC Vault: Guantanamo

Originally published May 24, 2009

Even in these days of Hope n' Change, it can be tough to be a Democratic politician. They want Guantanamo closed because Bush was keeping those poor souls locked up illegally. But the Dems also don't want to get blamed if the prisoners turn out to be "terrorists" once released on American soil. So they've denied funds to close Guantanamo...thus making themselves the new jailers.

Update 4/2/2011

Guantanamo hasn't been in the news much lately because, two years after the cartoon above, Barack Obama and the Democrats have quietly decided to keep it open after all, even though they'd
previously claimed that the simple existence of the prison facility was an abomination which helped our nation's enemies recruit new terrorists.

And oddly, the same mainstream media that had previously lumped Guantanamo in with Auschwitz and Buchenwald has fallen silent. In much the same way that they aren't blaming Obama for the appalling military "kill teams" (who took photos of civilians they'd murdered), even though this
same media blamed President Bush personally for the egregious weeny-pointing which occurred at Abu Ghraib.

And so we get back to some very familiar basics: "Presidentin' is hard," "Obama lies," and "the mainstream media is full of hypocritical lefties."

Which brings us to the
main reason I pulled this cartoon from the vault: I just really like the punchline about Rocky Mountain oysters and Ritz crackers.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

It's a great punchline..... all the really great ones are true.

@Chuck- They do stay the same. Looking at the old cartoons, almost nothing has really changed. The same rhetoric, the same lies, the same results.

If I ever find an old cartoon in which I was just dead wrong, I'll happily post it and say so. But so far, I'm not seeing fiscal responsibility, a vibrant economy, a post-racial presidency, lowering healthcare costs, warmer relations with the Muslim world, or a new era of bipartisanship in Washington.

@gray lady- When that cartoon was published, you could also have stacked the Republicans' "rocky mountain oysters" on that same Ritz and still seen the edges. Happily, I think at least that has changed following the rise of the Tea Party patriots.

They tell you who they fear by the frequency and intensity of their attacks. Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, Jim DeMint, the Tea Party and anyone connected to it, conservative talkers, etc. It's a simple equation: Find out who the Obama-fluffers in the media hate and revile and align with them. As for Guantanamo...Rush said two years ago that they'd never shut it down. You're in good company, Stilton.

When Obama was pulled to the forefront back during the elections of 08, many folks, including conservatives, were war-weary, paying what we're paying for gasoline at the present time, and in general, fairly dissatisfied with a lot of things. Not surprising how a spell-binding orator, young, full of energy and new ideas, could entrance a nation (not me), and become the 'leader' of the free world. It was NOT a landslide victory though!

Kinda reminds me of how Adolph Hitler came to power...widespread dissatisfaction, unemployment, all that...and many were willing followers. We must all learn to discern between good and evil as the German people should have done. History does repeat itself. Fortunately, Obama is proving to everyone that he is inept, cowardly, inexperienced, totally not up to his position...not even half the 'leader' that Hitler was....at least Hitler got things done, albeit quite evil things. I do not put it past Obama to attempy to go that same route in some form if he felt it necessary...Thank God for our Constitution, thank God for our way of life. Imagine your life, your family's life, your children's lives at the hands of a brutal dictator such as Hitler. Then thank God for your freedom.

pryorguy,
I had a bud who had been in the army in Germany in the late '70s, and he told me that lots of older Germans would always say, "Hitler made the trains run on time!" That was apparently soooooo important to the Germans that they were able to overlook a war....
And the O was never a spellbinding orator except to the MSM. I think you have to actually SAY something to be spellbinding.

I was stationed in Germany from late 72 to early 75. That doesn't make me an expert on Germany by any stretch, but the Germans I knew didn't want to discuss Hitler at all. Suffice to say the people who followed him in the 30's and 40's were hoping that he'd change things. They had no idea how much. Funny how that hope for change comes back to bite you in the...end.

@JustaJeepGuy & Angry Hoosier Dad- I don't think Obama has the leadership of a Hitler, but I think he got into office by taking a very similar path. His threat is slightly reduced by the fact that he makes a wonderful candidate (at least to some), and a godawful president.

BUT...the damage is done when he (and the Dems) are able to push through programs like Obamacare, while fighting spending cuts of any kind, which increasingly make citizens into slaves of the government. That is how we end up with a totalitarian system, and in such a state of crisis that someone will have to be blamed to shift attention from the real "leaders" who caused it.

Who will it be next time? The jews? The evil rich? The educated? The elderly? Caucasians? The self-employed? All of the above?

Obama won't be the one to make it happen (I hope), but his "presidency" is a crucial and huge step into putting our nation into position for that final takeover by the dangerous people who pull Barry Soetoro's strings (and those of many, many others).

The difference between the Democrats and Hitler was that the Nazis actually did get the trains to run on time. Democrats aren't even capable of that.
